River Dynamics and Function -drainage basins, channel characteristics, long profiles and effects of rejuvenation, flood management strategies.
Case study : Lyn drainage basin; Lynmouth floods

Pollution Monitoring - the use of biological and chemical indicators for detecting and monitoring river pollution; the causes and effects of pollution in rural areas; includes basic freshwater ecology, sampling methods and species identification.Case study : R.Torridge and tributaries

Coasts-influence of geology, coastal processes (past and present), weathering, mass movements and past climatic change on coastal landforms. Landscape interpretation and field sketching.Longshore drift and spit formation. Coastal zone management strategies (past, present and future).
Case study : Hartland Quay to Westward Ho!

Ecosystems - ecosystem functioning, succession and zonation, impacts and consequences of conservation management: Case studies :
·sand dunes: Braunton Burrows, Northam Burrows
·salt marsh : Bideford Salt Marsh
· woodland : local deciduous and coniferous

Recreation and Conservation - managing conflicts of interest - recreational carrying capacity; impacts of trampling/ overgrazing; user impacts; ecological value. Case studies : Northam Burrows Country Park, Dartmoor, Exmoor

Retail Location - functional morphology, investigating change over time and explaining current trends in local retail location; analysing the impacts of an out-of-town development on a town centre. Case study : Barnstaple, Bideford, GreatTorrington

Settlement Function and Patterns - application of Christaller’s Central Place Theory to reality - hierarchy, range, threshold, location.  Case study : North Devon

Tourism and Leisure in Rural Environments - impacts of the tourism and recreation; importance of tourism to the local economy; assessing local values and attitudes to the above (questionnaire / surveys). Case study : North Devon; Tarka Country (the development and importance of “green” or“sustainable” tourism)
