Life history

Distribution

Limiting factors

Adaptations

perennial

yellow dunes

water availability due to limited organic matter in the sand and hence limited water holding capacity and rapid infiltration rate

-minimises evapotranspiration by:thick cuticle, stomata in pits within grooves, rolling of leaf maximises water uptake by :large, spreading root system, underground rhizomes

salinity

- can only colonise areas where salinity has been reduced by rainfall

nutrient availability

-nitrogen fixing bacteria and mycorrhiza associated with roots(Ranwell, 1972)

wind

-deep roots provide anchorage; rolled leaf minimises drag

windblown sand

-burial stimulates growth of new buds

temperature

- production of stress metabolites (eg proline) increases the heat stability of enzymes (Crawford, 1989)
